D-CARE Study

Purpose

In the United States, an estimated six million people are affected by dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common cause. The effects of dementia are devastating for both the person diagnosed with dementia and their caregivers. Clincal manifestations include memory loss, confusion and disorientation, poor balance and falls, incontinence, swallowing disorders, recurring pneumonia, and difficult behaviors. These daily challenges often lead to caregiver stress, burnout, and medical illnesses.

As a result, dementia affects the quality of life for patients and their caregivers, and challenges health care systems and community-based organizations to meet the diverse medical and social needs of persons affected with dementia and their families. This study compares three different approaches to managing persons with dementia and helping their caregivers.
